Excellent hair clearance is obtained after a course of laser treatments.
Owing to Ellipse’s square pulse technology and dual mode filtering hair removal by Ellipse IPL systems is market leading in contrast to many laser IPL treatments the treatment also helps with pigmentation to the skin. It uses a light via a hand piece to target the melanin in the hair follicle. This light then converts to heat, it then destroys the hair follicle and leaves it unable to produce a new hair.

The Procedure

The Intense Pulsed Light is attracted to melanin, which is found in hair. For effective hair removal the IPL targets the pigment in the hair. Prior to treatment a gel is applied to the skin to optimise the treatment. An applicator is then pressed onto the skin and the light energy is absorbed into the hair causing a heat reaction to destroy the follicle. The treatment is only successful in the Anagen stage (growing stage) of the hair growth, therefore a course of treatments is required. All skin types can be treated.

Precautionary measures to be taken before and after the laser treatment

It is of the utmost importance and the reason why a consultation is required before proceeding with the treatment. Direct sun exposure, self-tanning lotions and tanning booths must be avoided one month before and after the treatment.
A good medical sunblock with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 30 or higher must be used daily for at least one month before and after the procedure to reduce the risk of pigment changes and to protect the skin from harmful UV rays.
Waxing, threading and plucking are not recommended for minimum one month before the treatment. Patients undergoing laser hair reduction are advised to shave the day before the laser procedure.
Use of active creams such as Retin-A or AHA (glycolic acid) should be discontinued at least four days before the treatment. Any laser procedures are not recommended during pregnancy or while taking a drug called Roaccutane.
A thorough consultation will be offered before proceeding to explain fully the protocol and assess suitability for the treatment. A patch test may be performed to ascertain parameters most suitable for your individual case.
Eye protection glasses will be provided for both the technician and the client to wear when receiving and performing treatment.

Theory Explained

Broad-spectrum light is applied to the surface of the skin, targeting melanin. This light travels through the skin until it strikes the hair shafts or the bulb (root). The bulb is usually where the highest concentration of melanin is located. As the light is absorbed, the bulb and most of the hair shaft are heated, destroying the hair-producing papilla. It is also claimed that heat conversion occurs directly in the darker capillaries that bring blood to the follicle.
At any one time, not all hair follicles are ‘active’, and only active hair follicles can be affected by the treatment. ‘Inactive’ hair follicles can be treated as they become ‘active’ over time. For IPL treatments, an average of 8–10 treatments are required to remove most visible hair. No common treatment protocol exists and it depends on the equipment used and patient skin type. The area to be treated should be clean shaven and free of sunburn. Treatment sessions are usually 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Questions and Answers

Permanent Hair Reduction can be successfully achieved with the Ellipse Intense Pulsed Light system. After the first treatment the client gets significant reduction in hair density. Also re-grown hairs tend to become much finer and slightly less dark.

It varies from patient to patient, depending on the skin colour as well as the thickness and density of the hair. On average 5 – 7 sessions at 4 – 6 week intervals are necessary. Generally speaking, the thicker and darker the hair, the faster the result.

Yes. It is completely safe. Ellipse is a 2nd generation Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) system utilising a patented ‘dual mode filtering’ system, which removes all unnecessary and potentially harmful wavelengths. The Ellipse has pre-programmed treatment suggestions for different skin and hair types thus allowing the energy levels to be adjusted for the client’s individual needs.

The laser can cause some discomfort, depending on personal tolerance, but this sensation can be minimized by a topical anesthesia cream applied up to one hour before the session.

During your consultation you will be prescribed the necessary creams

We use different lasers settings depending on your skin and hair colour, hair texture and its location on the body. Our advanced Ellipse IPL Laser machine can remove all hair colours apart from grey and white from all parts of the body provided the hair is thick enough. Very fine hair cannot be removed, but it can be temporarily bleached with the laser.

A popular request is for men to have hair reduction in the neck area which is very uncomfortable to shave and or produces skin lesions after each shaving (folliculitis barbae).

Ellipse is very different from electrolysis and waxing. In comparison to electrolysis – Electrolysis is a much slower process as the needle has to be inserted into the hair follicle one at a time. Electrolysis can also be painful and can cause scarring.

In comparison to waxing, waxing can also be painful. The hair growth needs to be a certain length before waxing can be repeated. In some cases the after effects can be a disadvantage to the client i.e. ingrown hairs and skin reactions.

Ellipse treats larger areas of hair growth in shorter periods of time. It is less painful, much faster, more convenient and has been shown to reduce in-growing hairs and skin reactions.a
